Mental health is gaining more attention in the news and corporate boardrooms, leading to increased focus and awareness.

The Foundation has called on the Government to double mental-health-research funding in the next five years, from the existing 5.8 per cent of total United Kingdom health-research spending, and to set up a Royal Commission to look at how to prevent mental ill-health.

May is recognized as Mental Health Month by Mental Health America, which along with other organizations looks to spread the word that mental health is something everyone should care about. It is now being refreshed and updated by the current Minister.

"The students have responded with enthusiasm and are rising to the challenge in an incredible fashion. Ultimately, no one is in a better position than the person living with a mental health condition to determine what support they need - but HR can only get the ball rolling once lines of communication are opened". The increased visibility and acceptance of mental health has been a major movement for the last several years, all around the world.

From 2010/11 to 2012/13 the rate of self-harm in ten to 24-year-olds was 688.7 per 100,000, the second highest in Merseyside and nearly double the England rate of 352.3.

"Part of the stigma is people don't think mental illness is a thing and they just have to pull themselves up by their bootstraps", said Kali Brummitt, a mental health researcher at the University of Calgary, noting that while everyone recognizes physical ailments some people can have trouble comprehending what having a mental illness is like. "It's why pathways to wellness are so important and why we need to spread the word" noted Neyhart. Inevitably, that is going to mean a variety of nuanced solutions, with the flexibility to account to the greatest extent possible for individual needs. There will be many informational tables by various agencies throughout the area.

The Mayor of Wandsworth Cllr Richard Field said: "Wandsworth is delighted to support this event in order to raise awareness of an issue that affects a fifth of borough residents at any one time".

"What we've found is women are often more likely to be anxious about other people perhaps than men". The more stories shared, the more this message spreads'.

Shooting the messenger in such cases is just as bad as those vacuous politicians seeking to make political capital out of the overall situation.

The county is lacking in mental health services. But there are steps that maintain well-being and help everyone achieve wellness. Socioeconomic, biological and environmental factors all play a role in mental health "An environment that respects and protects basic civil, political, socio-economic and cultural rights is fundamental to mental health promotion".
